Start your journey in the history of Naxos from Chora and the famous Portara, which welcomes you to the port of the island. Portara is part of the temple of the god Apollo built in the 6th century BC on the island of Palatia. It is the symbol of the island and is one of the best places to enjoy the sunset. Continue walking around Naxos Town with the imposing castle and the monuments of archeological interest. Look for the well-preserved temple of the goddess Demeter in the village of Sangri which is also the rehearsal for the Acropolis and of course the unique Kouros in the villages of Apollo and Melanes.

The walk in the history of Naxos continues in the Venetian castles, which are imposingly and arrogantly located in many parts of the island. Do not forget to visit the churches of the island, such as the monastery of Christ the Illuminator, Agios Eleftherios and Panagia Drosiani, the oldest Byzantine church in the Balkans, which is also a monument of UNESCO.

The Archaeological Museum of Naxos exhibits findings dating from the Neolithic Period to the first Christian times (5300 BC – 5th century AD). Also, in the village of Apeiranthos there are three museums, the Archaeological, the Folklore and the Museum of Natural History, where you can admire even more aspects of the historicity and the cultural and natural wealth of the island.
